Hey guys, the wife wants me to take her Musky fishing for one last trip for her for the year. Debating whether to drive to Minnetonka this weekend (2 1/2 hours), or Mille Lacs (4 1/2 hours). We will fish both Sat and Sun if the weather isn’t too bad. I”ve fished both, but alot more familiar with Mille Lacs. If I fish Minnetonka, are there buoys marking shallow areas or am I on my own when it comes to navigation? Also can anyone recommend which landing to use? I’ve used Spring Park, but was thinking maybe Grey’s Bay access might be better? Thanks for any help. Mike

They pulled all the buoys out at the end of last week, so you’re on your own if you go there this weekend.

As far as landings go, it really just depends on what part of the lake you want to fish, especially with the buoys pulled out. Spring Park, Grey’s Bay, Maxwell and North Arm are all good ramps.

If you got good gps with 1′ contour mapping, I would go to Tonka!!! Gray’s bay would be my go-to spot for launching.

Use the Grays landing if you head to Tonka. WO a 1ft contour I would stay off Tonka unless you know it extremely well. I grew up on the lake and am still alittle squirly when the bouys are out.

    Good luck either way

Thanks for the replies, I just bought a 110C with the chip, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to get it installed in time, so I might chance it without. If I am careful I might be ok since I’ve been there before. Thanks again.

If you don’t get it installed buy the Lakemaster map. Much cheaper than a lower unit. The map will also give you a general idea where to fish. Get on the deep weed edges of big weed flats or points and either troll the edge or cast over the weeds. Most of the weeds are laying down so you should be running in about 10 to 12 ft depths. Tonka was a little slow over the weekend. Some follows nothing hooked but the bite is getting close. We are just about past turnover conditions and the big ones will be on the prowl. Think BIG – 12″ Jakes, big bucktails like Eagle Tails, at least 10″ Believers. You get the idea.

Man if its a nice day go to Lacs… If you do send me a PM and will send you a safe GPS track and a couple of places that we could not keep the skis off while fighing walleyes… two years ago we got 3 in 2.5 hours and one of the musky guys came over to ask what the heck !!!! We were trolling Rogues at 3-4 mph in mid November… and yes the walleyes bit that fast. Mind you the skis came right at sundown…
