My fishing partner got a musky! Top water in the AM. Not a giant but I’ll take it. Caught a bunch of northerns. Biggest hit tape at 37″ so that counts as a musky to me. With the northerns finally turning on muskies have got to get going here. I expect to get some fish after this cold front. Big northern came on a trolled swimbait 3way rig out in 25ft. The musky was on the deep weed edge.

StanMan,
way to go on the Pike,
any pics of the Ski?????
should be a good August. good luck. Jack…July 27, 2005 at 6:55 pm #375141Minnetonka Muskies have been a bit slow but the Bass are on fire. Fished yesterday from 5am-2pm…one Musky…48-49″ ate a Stomper after following in hot on a Showgirl bucktail twice. That was the only Musky seen, I did hook up with something huge off a bridge pilon on a Tiger Tube….ripped lot’s of drag from my Calcutta 400 and them threw the hooks. Wish I would have seen it, maybe a Pike. With the cooler weather I think some of the better Pike are moving up from the deep water early in the AM…I got three that where in the 30-32″ class and of course lot’s of slime darts. Lot’s of bass in the 10-15″ range with one that was 20″ The better bass came early in the AM on spinnerbaits in the shallow slop, later I was getting them on tubes on the rocks and around bridge pilons. That was the first time I’ve ever Bass fished on Tonka, I’ve caught lot’s of them while Musky fishing but man is that fun on a 7′ Meduim Avid with 12# line instead of the 8′ Heavy Thornes with 80# line That 20″er was like setting into a tree stump!!!!!
July 28, 2005 at 4:35 am #375193Tonite we boated 2 nice skies. They both hit jigs while we were reeling them in over 12′ milfoil points. The first was 45″ and the second was 41″. I was amazed at how thick these fish were as well as how pale in color they were. If it was a bass that pale I would say it was spending its time deep for sure. Would the skies be doing the same and just happened to be cruising for a meal tonight?
July 28, 2005 at 2:09 pm #375226I think with the hot weather the’ve been deep most of the summer and with the cooler air they are moving up in the slop.
July 28, 2005 at 5:48 pm #375291anybody been dropping an aquaview over the side into the milfoil and checking temps below the slop???
July 28, 2005 at 8:56 pm #375335The muskies you got I am sure are spending the bulk of their time in deep water, only up shallow to eat. When you get a fish that spends a lot of time shallow they tend to be dark, almost sun burned. They tend to be very dark in color on the top and half way down their sides. Nice fish by the way. Any photos?
July 29, 2005 at 1:25 pm #375439Gary, water temps are kind of mid 70s to about 20ft with the recent drop in air temps. And yes the muskies are deep. They are popping up to feed and heading back down. With the abundance of panfish the feeding windows appear to be very tight and inconsistent as to time. All my action has been fishing 20ft depths or more off the weed flats and points. Marking a lot of fish but getting these inactive fish to strike is tough. I have gotten zip fishing the tops or even the edges of the weed flats. I do expect the bite to improve once the fish get adjusted to the temp change. Hopefully tonight and tomorrow!
