I hadn’t been out on Big Marine for a long time. Yesterday was a little spooky weather-wise but it was still an interesting trip. The strong winds made it difficult, especially in my little boat so I couldn’t hit all of the spots I wanted to. There were some sunfish close to shore in the quiet, sheltered spots. A few of these were nice sized and fell victim to my fly rod. The Crappies were much harder to find, as they still aren’t running around in the shallow areas. I found them scattered over a deep flat in 11-12 feet of water. There were some green cabbage weeds and sand grass on this flat, with the weed tops coming up to about 7 feet. The Crappies weren’t super aggresive but would hit a 1 inch tube jig fished 6 feet below a bobber. For every Crappie I caught I probably caught 3 Bass. They were definitely on the prowl and while they weren’t especially big they were a lot of fun on the little ultra-light rig I was using.
Then I noticed that the water squirting out of the powerhead on my 15 horse Evinrude was a mere trickle, not a nice strong jet of water. The motor didn’t overheat but this is certainly something that needs to be looked at. Wish me luck replacing the water pump on a 1982 outboard!
