What a day/night may not need shelter I am going to a lake close to you that produced a 17 inch 2.65 slab about a week ago.
Hey ggoody, that is one big tuna!!! What side of the metro did you snag that one????

Not me a friend snagged the crappie….I would call it sw metro……I have never seen a Slab over 15 until this year another friend got 17 inch 3.1 extra thick slab in wisconsin early this month. I just saw the replica of the Whaletail lk 17 inch 3.8 I didn’t like the look of replica it looked kinda fake, huge though.
Guess I’ll have to happy with my bucket full Red LK slabs, had quite few 14 1/2 inchers last time up I think the biggest was 1.88…..
Wayzata bay last night…..nothing to show for it except a couple empty beer cans.
Going again tonight….the area we were in looked promising…very little pressure…good break….I am going to move out closer to the tip of the point we were fishing. The guy I went with last night wanted to try the spot we hit….it was an inside turn on the shoreling break….looked great on the map.
Buckshot, Have you tried the hump in Maxwell bay? If you go straight from the landing in Maxwell to the channel to Stubbs you will find a hump in between. I cameraed some nice walleyes there last fall on the deep side of the hump back toward the landing. The top of the hump is 10ft and I saw these fish in 15 just coming off the hump toward the landing. Worth a try???? Might be a few people there. I haven’t ice fished Tonka in about 10 years so not sure of the fishing pressure in that area.
I am zero for the last three nights – trying new spots to me and not making contact. Trying sharp breaks down to 40ft along big weed flats. Fishing in 18 to 25ft. Camera has been showing some weed growth and sand/gravel bottom – haven’t located a rock pile yet. Walleyes aren’t there. Moving out to some midlake humps later in week if I can get to them. Thinking deeper is the trick. If that doesn’t work I am going to explore some neckdown areas.
I stood and watch buckshot blank again last night in Wayzata bay. I think I took off around 7ish, not sure how much longer they fished.
As a side not, ride across Tonka at night is pretty freaky…especially when you get off course and end up in the wrong bay!!
You must have found your way home eventually, which is good…had you not made it home your wife would never let you ice fish with me again. Considering the events of the first ice fishing adventure.
We bailed shortly after you did…the guy I was with wasn’t really dressed for standing outside……I am not sure what he thought we were going to do. It was nice out last night….no wind temps in the 20s….that is a great evening in late Jan. I will probably head out there next week for an evneing or 2 and try a different spot…might have to try that spot in Maxwell bay.
Let’s try and find that spot in Maxwell. I’ll get my camera back and we can do some poking around out there.
That hump runs more east west and is north of the bluff on the East side of the bay. It is pretty long probably 150 yds or so. I have fished maxwel quite a bit and never caught an eye but I have not iced this spot. Mostly big pike and small crappies. Did get a 42″ muskie off of that hump this summer while bass fishing.
Was out last night – steep drop to 50ft from big weed flat. Dropped camera down hole, rocks all over the bottom (even saw a few snagged crankbaits stuck in the rocks!). Fished from 15ft to 25ft and never had a bite. Where’s waldo???
Was it rebel wee R? I saw the same bait! Too bad about no eyes. I’ve just seen them there in the fall. They still have to be somewhere close by because it’s such great looking structure. Maybe next time. I still didn’t get a chance to get out on that lake you told me about for the crappies, stanman. Maybe this next weekend.
Moved to another spot – fished a saddle topping off at 23ft connecting a point from shore to a midwater hump. The midwater hump is surrounded on three sides by 40+ft depths. That ought to clue everyone in to where I was Anyway was catching perch on fatheads – some really nice ones and boy did they have big bellies. No walleyes but they have to be close by. Going to move around the hump a little more. Bottom was sand with a decent amount of rocks scattered around. MNFISH – got a good report of decent sized crappies and a walleye or two coming out of Lotus. Fish the hole off Carver beach. I’m not heading there but the other spot I told you about might get fished this weekend. My end of Tonka is going to be swarmed under by a ice fishing event on Sat. If the weather is good I might head to Pool 4 though.
Three more nights and nothing to show for it. Had fun checking out the structure anyway. That is it for walleyes. Crappies on some smaller lakes and an occasional trip to the river until the ice is off.
Actually we have had some success on Black lk quite a few 11/12 inch Crappies.
In the most recent outdoor news there is picture of the 3 pounder I was telling you guy’s about in Wisconsin, have not seen the issue yet.
Now the 17″ 2.65 Slab I was telling you about from the SW metro is in Outdoornews, and on their homepage. Tried to post the link but this site won’t let me copy or paste anything.
