It was WAY to nice yesterday. How many more days like that one are left before it’s time for the power auger? So I took the day off and headed out to DeMontreville.

We’re well into Fall patterns now. Most of the weeds are dead or dying, so the trick was to watch the depth finder and find deeper weedbeds that may still be healthy. I didn’t find much cabbage but there were clumps of coontail that were still green. The best presentation was the biggest crank bait I had. Worms and Jigs just didn’t get much action. The Bass were really scattered. One here, one way over there. You needed to keep moving and cover as much water as possible.

I can’t understand the Northerns in this lake. They act insane right at first light and then shut down as soon as the sun hits the water. I never saw or caught a Northern after 8 AM.

Finally, I caught a 12 inch Crappie right at dawn on a crankbait. This was unusual because of the size of the lure AND the size of the Crappie. Years ago D was a decent Crappie lake that got pounded through the ice and that was that. Last winter you could catch some Crappies but they were all 4 inches long. It was nice to see a respectable sized one. It was carefully released.

Now I’m heading up to the Orr area with my wife for a 25th anniversary sight-seeing trip. We comprimised; the boat stays home but I can do a little shore fishing . Look out Vermillion river!

    Hi Mike,

Just got back in town. I have to admit that i don’t have a thermometer in the boat so I don’t know what the water temps were. Maybe it’s time to buy some accessories for the Eagle locator I have.

The Vermillion was a dud. I fished below the falls and caught one small Northern and that was it. The wife had a great time though!
