Good Day on DeMontreville

Breaking with my usual routine, I headed out to D on a Sunday and also left the Fly rods home.

We’re definitley getting into Fall patterns. The weeds never really came up to normal levels with this strange summer anyway, but the shallow weeds are turning brown and the fish are moving. The weeds are growing in two distinct areas: Shallow from 2-8 feet and deep from 12 to 15 feet. Not everywhere has shallow or deep weeds, it must depend on bottom type and maybe sunlight pentration. I found a few fish along the outer edge of the shallow weeds right at dawn, including a dandy 19 incher that has one eye. I think i’ve caught that fish twice this summer. The deep weeds really produced, both with numbers and size (up to 21 inches). The best presentation was a 5 inch purple worm, Texas rigged with a 1/8 ounce sinker. Any more weight than that and they would ignore it. The worm had to drop slowly. Later as the sun came up I also found a few eager biters with a crankbait on the deep weedlines.

A great day to be on the water. I wonder how many of these we have left before I start thinking about filling up the propane tank and putting new line on the jiggle sticks?

Sounds like a fantasic morning to be on the water…(I was sleeping)…

The only mistake you made was to leave your fly rod at home!

It’s good to have some reports coming out of there, I haven’t fished this lake in 15 or so years. Sounds like it’s grown up! Hope to change that this week!
