Took a break from Tonka this week and fished Independence. Caught a bunch of crappies – averaged about 9 10″ or more a night and twice as many smaller. Got a few bonus walleyes, couple of 5lb northerns and one 35″ muskie. Beetle spins with twister tails were the ticket. A Storm swim bait paddle tail variety was also a big crappie producer. It also caught the muskie. Was fishing very shallow 4 to 5 feet but only two boat lengths from 15 feet in a fairly weedless backwater. It was not a “classic” spot but it worked for us. Other than water skiers the only other boat we saw was fishing muskies. Back to Tonka for the weekend. Still have to break the musky slump there.
