Public Boat Launches at Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis to Open Thursday, May 1
2014 Program Includes “On-Call” Inspections for Late Season Boaters
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will open its public boat launches and begin aquatic invasive species inspections at Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis at 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 1.
2014 marks the third year all watercraft or water-related equipment entering the water at the public boat launches on Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis are required to be inspected for aquatic invasive species. However, based on usage data collected during 2013, the inspection hours and dates have been modified.
AIS inspectors will be on duty at each boat launch:
May 1 through Labor Day: daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with boaters encouraged to launch watercraft before 9 p.m.
September 2 through October 31: daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. with boaters encouraged to launch watercraft before 7 p.m.
November 1 through December 1: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with boaters encouraged to launch watercraft before 4 p.m.
November 1 through December 1: On call inspections from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. A telephone number will be posted at the launches for boaters to call for an inspection. After inspection, the launch will be opened to allow the boater onto the lake. Boaters must call to be let off the lake following a post-inspection.
To improve compliance with the AIS inspection requirement, the public boat launches will be locked during non-launch hours. Boaters not exiting the lake by the boat launch closing times will be required to secure their boat at the launch and return for it the next day.
Only watercraft entering the water from the public boat launch will be inspected. Canoes, kayaks and sailboats either moored on the water or entering the lakes from other access points are not affected.
