Got out last night to Waconia at about 6:30 and boy was that wind howling, ~15+ mph. We ended up fishing protected reeds as anywhere else in the wind was pretty much non-manageable for boat control. They idea that we had and stayed with going to the lake was to ptich and flip plastics for some largies. We ended up throwing flippin’ tubes and jigs into the reeds and noticed that all of our fish came deeper into the reeds. (Deeper was over 5+ feet into the beginning of where the reeds start) I would like to say that we found a pattern but I am not sure if we totally did because we couldn’t nail down the types of reeds they perferred to be in. We ended up getting 10 fish in about 3 hours of fishing witht he biggest being ~2.5 lbs. Nothing too major in size but it was sure fun to pull them through the thick stuff. I really appreciated having my flipping stick with me to get the fish out and quick. (one hook set I pulled a 8″ bass out of the weeds and over my boat. )
Since we where not entireling ready to get off the lake when the sun was almost down, we tried trolling some cranks in front of the access for some walleyes with no luck. I have never tried this before on Waconia but I thought it might work given the weeds and sand transistion.

I plan on getting out again soon to tackle some of those bass again.

Got out on Waconia for a couple hours this morning to chance some the of those bass. With the woind wipping into the access I decided to hit the SW end of the lake. I started throwing baby 1s in firstiger and a flippin’ tube. I didn’t get much takers until the sun starting getting a little over head. About 8:300 I started to cash in. Flipping and casting weightless worms to the sand/milfoil transition produced the active fish for me. It appeared that the fish staged themselves right in the beginning of the weeds and would hit the bait just as it was coming into them. The biggest bass that I caught came out from a dock in about 4 feet of water. It was a great fish, hit hard, and pulled some good drag out. I took a couple of pictures, measured it (~19.25) and returned it back for another day.

Sorry for the short report but I was only out for 2-2.5 hours.

No, I haven’t. Where is that located?

Waconia is a great lake that has soem truly big bass in it. The best part of the lake is that no matter when you are out there the boat and skiers are not a problem.

I almost wish they would have kept the slot in place. It did a great thing for the lake.

    Mike-

What lake are you talking about with the slot? I was never aware of one on either of the lakes.

Until March of last year Waconia had a 17-21″ protected slot for bass. It had lasted for over 5 years. That is the main reason I believe there are so many bass in the 4-6lb range. Until last year the lake saw no tournament pressure either due to the slot, and now there are quite a few. the fish were still “dumb”, and is was a dream lake to guide on. Still is.

Are those bass really dumb. Shucks, I thought I was just getting better at bass fishing.
