It has been years if not a few decades since the last time I chased sunfish. After reading Clancy’s colum in the Outdoor news I thought it is time to get the kids, 4 and 6 years of age, out to get them going.

Anyway, looking for a good western metro area lake to drop in the boat on Saturday morning to give it a try. I had heard that Christmas lake on highway 7 near Excelisor(sp?) has some good sunfish but was told to get there early for parking. Does anyone else have any suggestions for me?

On most of the lakes out west you will want to get out early. While on Tonka and fishing the inside weed edges we saw lots of gills. They weren’t the biggest, but plenty on them. I’ve also heard good things about Bryant, Minnewashta and Spring. These 3 may not have as much boat pressure as well. Good luck.

I just moved from Chan and the Lake Susan and Lake Ann parks are pretty good for panfish. Lake Ann has a ton of them that sit right under the fishing pier and kids will love it no matter how small. As long as they catch something!!! Good luck!

It went really well. I ended up on a small lake in Eden Prairie called Mitchell. A buddy recommended it to me since he had been there several times this spring catching large mouths. There are some good ones in there. I want to go back without the kids so I can focus on them. Anyway, the sunfish were awsome as far as sunfish go. And the kids had a good time catching them, eating chips, eating candy, and drinking pop. Just what it should be. Another thing I liked is that there were no jet skies or boat traffic. The lake has a 10 hp. motor limit. I just used my trolling motor.

Thanks for asking and offering your suggestions.

Sounds like a good time!! Gald that you had a the chance to spend time with your kids fishing. Some of the best bonding moments for any father and child come from fishing!
