Targeting perch

Was wondering if there exist any decent places to find some decent size perch in the metro? They are hard enough to target in the first place, and when I do find any, they are only fingerlings. I’ve heard Mille Lacs would be the only viable option, is there nothing closer?

Not expecting anything like up north but 8-12″ would be nice. Willing to drive an hour or more. And I would be shore bound. My mom has a mean perch recipe.

Sorry, but i dont know any metro lakes with a huge perch population, but you could go to a gander mountain in the area and look at the metro book of fishing spots.this is what it looks like: http://www.sportsmansconnection.com/minnesota/fishingbooks/eastmetro/. but anyways, it will show you all of the lakes in a map, and for each of the lakes it has a report from area guides as well as a graph showing the number of fish netted in areas and what not.i remember reading about perch somewhere in there. Its a great tool to find lakes close to home.

Mind sharing that perch recipe? i need one for walleyes!

    MNTwins:

Grind Ritz crackers fine, season with pepper. Use equal parts egg and milk, beat together til blended. Pat filets dry, dunk in egg wash, then crackers and into fryer or frying pan. Cook til done, drain and salt to taste. Squeeze lemon and salt to taste again. Take gulp of beer and look out for may flies!!!

    Good luck

I don’t know the exact recipe but what it is is pretty much a fish salad. What I do know is the meat is not cooked. Just soaked in vinegar and then squeezed dry as possible. Mixed with some herbs and peanuts, then wrapped like a spring roll and dipped in her special sauce that is similar to thai peanut sauce.

Its a delicacy that can be enjoyed only once or twice a year because its a lot of work and yields so little eating. She has tried with other fish but none turns out the same way as perch. This reason alone is why I have always wanted to make a trip north for jumbos but have not had the opportunity.

I have kept a mess of perch a few times through the ice on Calhoun. Certainly not jumbos, but 9-10 inches. 6 is enough for a decent meal. You have to sort through a lot though.
