Anybody see or hear reports on the Governors Opener on WACONIA?
I thought for sure there would be a report in the Mpls. Tribune, checked section A, B (metro) & Sports, found nothing. I don’t think i’ve ever seen NON-Coverage of the Governors Opener.

    What’s up with that?
Democrat Governor fishing in a Republican stronghold?

    From our local radio station;

As this weekend’s Governor’s Fishing Opener in Waconia winds down, it’s been announced next year’s event will take place in Park Rapids. John Edman, director of Explore Minnesota, says Park Rapids reflects “what’s great about fishing and travel throughout Minnesota.” The Governor’s Fishing Opener has been held each year since 1948. The 2013 opener will run on May 10th and 11th. By the way, Dayton was skunked – no walleyes from Waconia.

I personaaly was able to be a host boat for the openor…..I went out from 1230 to 230 and was able to get 2w 18s as well as 2 shorts…….at 7 I took out a person from the dnr to take pictures so no fishing took place for us….I think it was a tough day with calm winds and high sun

Just a thought, but were they possibly trying to prove the CORMORANTS have eaten most of the WALLEYE’S in WACONIA?

Great way to to get GOVERNOR on your side, skunk him.

I know they’ve petitioned to get permits for sharp-shooters to reduce their numbers.

Doubtful! I’ve been fishing Waconia for a long time and the walleye/Muskie/bluegill/crappie/pike/bass population has never been stronger. Where else in the metro can you go and have a honest shot at a trophy for each one of the fish I’ve listed?
Maybe the governer just sucks at fishing??

Waconia is an awesome lake and I’m dissapointed that Waconia had a poor showing with the amount of press coverage. I was confident that the Governor was going to walk away with several nice fish as there were alot of good fisherman out there and the lake is loaded with giant walleye, bass, muskie, and sheephead Attached is the picture of the pig that won the plaque for the biggest walleye caught at the opener.

I agree, great lake with great fish. The Press came in early and left it seems.

Here my reasoning, listening to this clip:
    KARE11 clip, Cormorants

MPR clip Cormorants Bill by Kline & Peterson

From my personal experience, just don’t get too close to certain sides of the Island.

Nice Fish hillbeihle. you wanna share the technique?

I fished 12-4:30 on opener. we didn’t boat a fish. Only saw two fish caught.

also fished Saturday night. 8-11:30 1 walley 23″

very slow for me. Last year we hammered the fish in these same spots. I’ll be fishing deeper from here on out.
