Provide Input on AIS
At its meeting on December 8, 2011, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) Board of Managers will consider the future role of the MCWD in the prevention and control of aquatic invasive species (AIS).
Zebra mussels and other AIS pose an eminent threat to the natural resources and the recreational use of our lakes and streams. It is estimated that AIS will cost watershed residents several millions of dollars annually. While the MCWD believes that AIS should be managed on a statewide basis, the State currently does not have the staffing or resources to adequately protect the lakes and streams in the watershed.
The MCWD Board believes that a coordinated approach with its member communities and organizations along with locally-based programs can be a cost-effective approach to preventing the introduction and spread of AIS within the watershed. The MCWD is prepared to develop a comprehensive AIS prevention and control strategy that will describe the ongoing cost and the types of programs that will be required in this effort. Before expectations are created and before the MCWD invests the staff time and money in a plan, we would like to hear your thoughts.
The public is welcome to attend the MCWD Board of Managers meeting at 6:45pm December 8, 2011 at the MCWD offices at 18202 Minnetonka Boulevard, Deephaven, MN 55391. Written comments can be submitted to the following email address: [email protected].
