Headed out to Cedar lake on friday, I wanted to take my wife, Katie, with me but she was out shopping, and my friend Steve couldn’t make it, so I went by myself. (last week Steve and I caught 75-80 Crappies, with no exageration)and I wanted to see if they were still shallow.
After putting the boat in, I noticed a couple fishing on the dock, and asked if they wanted to join me for about 2 hours. They were very grateful and appreciated the offer, and jumped in. I told them what I had done the previous week with Steve, the temps were about the same- 62-63, which was warmer than I wanted, but the fish were still there and eager to eat.
I again used a small jig with a Berkley Gulp 2 1/2 inch minnow threaded on. Cast it out and slowly reel it back just over the weed tops (3-5 feet of water). Mike and Jill were getting a few under their bobbers, but the fish really wanted the bait moving. I rigged up a second rod for Jill, and she was quickly ribbing her husband on all the fish she started to catch. I then felt I had to rig Mike up another rod, and all three of continued to put the hurt on countless Crappies. Most of the size was 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 inches, no bigger ones, and also had a few very nice size Bluegills too.
The crappies definitely did not want a stationary bait under a bobber, it had to be moving.
I had to get going by 5:30p, so after 2 hours of constant “fish ON”, I had to leave and head home.
Sure was fun having Mike and Jill join me in the boat, and was much more fun than just going alone.
