A little late on the post but thought this weekend was worth talking about. I got on the lake late Saturday right after work. My wife and son joined me for an hour or so of good trolling action. Keeping with tradition this past few weeks we made a few runs shallow with #5 shadraps. 6-12FOW at no more then 1.6mph. We picked up 10 unders in a very short time. With the fast action I had to get back on the water at first light Sunday. Half way through the first run, no fish. 6:30 am hit and it was game on. We focused on the same depths as the night before but moved on to other areas of the lake to find larger fish. The bite was hot and heavy until 8:30 when we gave up any hope of sizable fish. 35 walleyes caught on the troll in 2 hours time running 3 rods. #5s out fished the #7s 10-1. All our fish were under the slot. Alot of fun but disappointing at the same time. What happend to all the big walleyes we used to get?

We have had the same experience on Holcombe not too far away. We will troll or jig and all we catch is 10-12inchers. we are 6-10fow. Any tips would be great. On the bright side… all those smaller ones will be big in a few years.

Big Dad – What size fish were you into? and how deep?

We did try to speed up and once we hit 2mph we could not get any fish. We were fishing ultra shallow as well. The extra motor thrust seemed to spook the fish.

There has to be better walleyes out there. They seem to far and few between this year.

Out on the water Sunday at sun up. The fog was so heavy you needed the GPS to navigate. Water temps took a plunge to 64-66 in most areas. I did find some water still holding 70deg. We went in search of your shallow water bite that had been son good for the past few weeks. Instead of our normal trolling habits we decided to cast raps in some of the key areas that our trolling runs have been producing. #4 jointed fire tiger and #7 glass shads were our lures of choice. (Thanks for the pointers Whitetip) Our average fish was a bit larger casting in comparison to what we had been getting on the troll. I was joined by two friends Matt and Dave Sunday morning and boated 20+ walleyes ranging from 12-15inches. Not sure why but Dave did not boat even one fish as he stood beside me in the front of the boat casting the same lure I had on We mixed a few nice smallies into the morning off the shallow gravel. We were off the water by 9am. You still have your peak hours but fishing can be good just about any time of the day this time of year. Good Lcuk!
