Was out on Wissota on a BEAUTIFUL May day yesterday. First time on Wissota during open season, it was nice to be back. Lots of sun, ZERO wind, not a cloud in the sky. Maybe not the best “catching conditions”, but it certainly was hard to beat as far as “fishing conditions” go.
A solo trip yesterday, I got on the water out of the CR&G launch around 5:30am and fished until about 1:30pm. Thanks to the attendant at the launch – I put my seasonal launch payment in the receptacle when I launched… When I came back, I had a note on my window saying he had already put my sticker on the boat trailer. Sweet!! Now I won’t have to wait for the sticker to come in the mail, then forget to put it on before the next trip.
I tried a NUMBER of different locations with limited success (again, catching success was limited, but given the weather, the peace and quiet, and NOT HAVING TO WORK, my fishing day was a huge success! )
Tried mostly trolling cranks and pitching jigs/minnow. Probably should have tried crawlers as well, but I didn’t have any with me. Trolling bite was non-existant in the places I was working (other than a couple rocks/logs that stole a few baits ) – leadcore and flatlines.
Tried for crappies in a few limited locations, but I don’t really have a clue what I’m doing for pre-spawn slabs — struck out in that department until I caught one (and only one…) accidentaly while fishing for walleyes. Maybe one of these years I’ll figure it out. I see that many of you do very well on pre-season crappies, but location mostly, and partly tactics still baffle me. Oh well. Crappies on that lake are at me right now….
Only few fish I got were draggin a jig/minnow combo in 10-15 fow. Caught two “under” Walleyes and one real nice crappie. Purple/white H2O jig caught all three. Saw a large catfish boated, but other than that, very quiet day on the lake. Only a couple of go-fast boats out there.
Ran around just about the whole lake – was a great to get out and enjoy some quality “quiet daddy fishing time”.
Good luck next time out!!!
