Wissota daily double, 8/11

Warm day on the backyard gem today!

One of the things I’ve promised myself that I’d do this year is think outside of the box on Wissota. I’ve settled into a comfortable routine that I can count on to produce, but the only way to become a more complete angler is to step outside of that box, even if that means catching fewer fish than you might otherwise.

Here are some results from today’s trip “outside of the box”.

First, a Wissota bass double….a smallie and an uncommon (for me, at least) Wissota largie. These were my first two fish of the day, and came on consecutive casts. I boxed up the largie for a photo op before sticking the smallie. Once I had them both in the boat, it was time for a quick snap before getting back to work.

The next two casts….two more cookie cutter smallies, just like the one in the photo.

Crappies are one species that Wissota grows big. We don’t catch a lot of crappies in any given year, but we rarely catch one smaller than 10″, with 12’s common. Here’s a 12+” crappie that came as a result of fishing outside of the box again.

All told, I stuck 7 species today….LM and SM bass, pike, crappie, blugeill, perch, and of course, walleye. Overall, a good trip outside of the box on a warm August day.

As summer wears on, Wissota smallies just go on an eating rampage. This particular smallie, no bigger than 11-12″, barfed up the large, still living crayfish on the left as I was unhooking him. I have so many crayfish bits in different parts of my boat that a little light vacuuming before bed is in order.

I’m thinking that this is (was) a perch from last year’s hatch. I had other smallies flinging these guys through the air while they made their way to the boat to get unhooked.

All this food in their bellies, yet they still had room for….what I was offering them.

Nice catch Jason!Ive seen 1000s of those size perch dead at the township launch…Dnr says they were incidental catch in lake survey and the lake is jammed with them.Darn good walleye feed!

    Jason,

Great mixed species day and nice pics.

Did you have someone in the boat with you or do you carry a tripod?

I have had some nice catches while fishing alone and had a hard time getting a decent picture of my catch without it laying on the floor, which doesn’t really make much of a picture.

If a tripod, what do you recommend?
