For Jason or others who fish Wissota a lot….

I was just wondering what sort of anchor you guys generally fish with. Being that you can face everything from deep water, to river current, to gale force winds with large waves, I am curious as to which anchor you feel works best in such a broad range of conditions.

    Thanks!

My big waterspike with coated chain and 100′ of braided rope has never failed me, no matter what I’ve asked it to do.

I think a guy would probably do all-right with an 18 lb Richter as well. More compact so it’s easier to store, but also heavier than the ‘spike.

Looks like they make 3 sizes… Per Cabelas website, anyway…

Up to 16 ft. (boat length)
    16 ft.-22 ft.
    22 ft.-35 ft.

When you say “big” waterspike, was it the really big one or the medium sized one? And any particular length of coated anchor chain? 5′ plenty?

I would assume the medium one would be just about right for my 18″ Lund, but at the same time I hate to underbuy – better to get it right the first time…

Any dealers in town that you know stock these?

    Thanks again for you help!!

Jason has the BIG one. It’s a little overkill for Wissota, but he bought it for the swift current of the Mighty Miss.

He will tell you that he’s happy the Skeeter has enough room for it. His previous boats didn’t have storage suitable for that big boy.

Here are a couple random thoughts.

    – 2K’s has a net that’s too small.
    – Jason has an anchor that is too big.

I found a smaller spike they sell at Walmart for about $20. I have used it in high water on the Mississippi and 25mph winds lake fishing. I have had no trouble holding in those conditions. Not only that but they are cheap! I also use an 18lb regular old rubber coated anchor for the back of the boat if you are dealing with a changing wind.

    I must be overcompensating.

Ask yourself this question….Why do you want to anchor?

Answer: Keep the boat in one place.

I’ve never budged with the big spike. Never. Wind, waves, current….whatever.
