Yes, it’s true I boated my PB for the year yesterday. Not a true trophy Wissota Walleye, but good enough to put a smile on my face. I don’t think everyone loves catching walleyes as much as me but I had the walleye shakes for about 10 minutes. The wife also said I had a perma-grin for the rest of the day. What can I say, I love catching walleyes. Anyway, on with the info.
Friday night was a cold night in Chippewa and I hopped in my boat and realized the water temp had dropped dramatically to what Halfen had reported the previous day. A light bulb came on in my head that said, it was time to start exploring my fall walleye water. I drove the boat over a defined neck down area and saw the graph full of bait clouds and fish around the cloud.
I set up vertically jigging an 1/8 jig and minnow combo and really had a hard time managing two rods. My third fish was the one in the lame “ruler shot”. It got the ticker going and had me praying with every crank of the reel it was the my prey of choice.
I went out this morning and found the same concentration of fish. What I’m finding is that the fish will come through in waves. I believe what’s happening is the fish are on the move and I’m intercepting them in the middle of their migration pass.
I was set up in 16 – 18 FOW.
My advice is to focus on the neck down areas and if you have past experience with Wissota, now is the time to hit your fall locations.
I was amazed by the traffic on the lake yesteday. It’s great to see folks enjoying a nice fall day on the water. I was also glad to see a local C.O. was out ensuring everyone was “walking the line”.
Enjoy your time of the water.
