Good things are on the horizon on Lake Wissota.

Main lake temps are finally trending downwards….68 today, and we’ll chop a few degrees off that temperature this week with predicted lows in the 30s and 40s. Even that small dip into the 60s helped with today’s bite.

Joining me today was Dan Meyer from IDO Sponsor Skeeter Boat Center. Dan and I split our time between pitching jigs and pulling cranks, and ended up with a half-way decent multispecies bite. Dan is shown here with the highlight fish, a dandy smallie that hit the tape at 18″. This fish, as well as large numbers of sub-slot walleyes and my boat’s first decent (10″+) crappies of the fall fell for jig/minnow presentations near main-lake cribs. Yes, I said minnows. FINALLY, a minnow bite on the backyard gem.

The trolling bite for us was consistent during the midday hours but slowed as the sun fell from the sky. Leadcore, 20-25′ in the lake and 14-18′ in the Chip. Best results for us came with the bait about one color above the bottom, a touch slower than 2 mph and with larger profile baits than the SR5s and SR7s that dominate summer trolling patterns on Wissota.

My boat won’t be getting washed in Wissota for several weeks now….all of you guys who read these little reports will have to pick up the slack and write the regular Wissota updates until I return!
