Am I the only guy fishing the backyard gem these days?
Got out for the afternoon yesterday to check on the development of the fall bite. It’s not on yet, but there are signs of general improvement.
We put ~ 15 walleyes into the boat, all but one by pulling cranks on lead in 20-26 fow in the main lake. A wide variety of patterns were working, including straight and jointed baits, with larger baits like SR8s and SR9s being slightly more effective. Speeds in the low 2’s seemed to be the best.
Pitching bait in the yellow river arm was slow but provided a decent mixed bag of smallies, hand-sized gills and a random walleye. Crawlers still preferred over minnows….another sign that the fall bite is not yet upon us.
Water temps in the system range from ~ 65 near the Jim Falls dam to ~ 68 on the windward side of the lake. Algae is pretty managable. Flow in the river was significant yesterday with all the rain to our north, and the water in the chip was definitely dirty.
