An above average late summer walleye bite is in progress on Lake Wissota. Like most months of August, most of my time is spent in the moving waters of the Chippewa River above the lake, fishing a combination of light jigs tipped with livebait and cranks on leadcore. These presentations typically yield a multi-species blend of walleyes and smallies, and yesterday’s results defintely were slanted towards eyes.
Pictured is Dave Vollmer from Eau Claire with his PB Wissota walleye, a 25″ CPR beauty from the Chip that munched a leadcore-delivered crank. Dave and his friend Kirk scored good numbers of eyes (most in the slot with a few eaters mixed in) and smallies up to 15″ using the two presentations noted above. Adjusting presentations to the available current was the key for us this day. In low-flow areas well downstream from the Jim Falls dam, most of our fish were taken on cranks…I presume that these fish are roamers and will move significant distances to grab a (fake) meal. In higher flow areas (downstream flow 0.7-1.2 mph), all of our fish were taken dragging 1/16 oz jigs tipped with crawlers or leeches. This is a very natural presentation for gamefish that are using the current to deliver their next meal.
Drop me a line if you’d like to cash in on this late summer walleye opportunity!
