We decided to spend a couple of days in Chippewa (Friday and Saturday) and towed the boat! I decided to challenge myself on this trip and did not bring any live bait… I did, however, have a bucket of GulpAlive minnows and another of their leeches…
On Friday, we got the Rod and Gun Club around 8 a.m. and launched. The weather looked fantastic and I was hoping the bite would be good too. Our first ‘jigging spot’ was unproductive – just one slimer… we moved to a second spot, over some cribs, and we managed to pull in two walleye (both ‘unders’) and a nice Wissota crappie.
I’ve had my eye on a particular flat basin-like area of the lake since last summer when I marked many fish while pulling the kids around on an inner tube. I decided to break out the dipsy divers and crankbaits and see if I could get any action out there. I wasn’t real sure if it was a good idea when the first fish I pulled up was a rock bass . After that, however, it was fishing nirvana!!! Over the course of the next couple of hours, I landed a total of 14 walleye. I kept looking for an ‘over’ but it seems there were just two size-classes at that location – the walleyes were either 12.5″ to 13.5″ or they were 16″ to 17.5″. Hey, I’m not complaining… I had an absolute blast catching as many fish as I did, while playing with a new technique at an area I’ve never fished before… Later in the afternoon, I was going to change over the fish-n-ski to pull the kids around on the tube but was chased off the water early as a thunderstorm was moving in…
My son decided to make the drive over on Saturday morning (I think my report of non-stop action had something to do with his decision!!!). A buddy of my bro-in-law was also driving over so after he got there, we convoyed it over to the rod and gun club and launched. I chatted with Sully for a few minutes (the tourney guys had just gotten out) and off we went… The action wasn’t quite as hot as it was on Friday afternoon but the fish were still there and willing to hit the cranks. My son and I had our limit by noon and threw back another 7 slotters during the morning. My bro-in-law and his buddy also managed a limit but it took them a little longer (if you guys read this, you know I have to rub that in a little bit ). While they were still fishing, I tied up to the dock and enjoyed a cold beverage and a sandwich and switched the boat over to towing the tube. We probably should have started towing sooner as another nasty storm was making its way over toward Wissota. I managed to give each of the girls a bit of a ride, dropped them off at the dock and started to head over to the boat launch. Not soon enough… I thought the middle of the lake was bad on Friday when I headed back but that was nothing compared to the waters on Saturday! The winds had picked up considerably and the rain was coming down in sheets. A few times, the waves actually crashed over the bow of the boat and I felt like I was in a scene from “World’s Deadliest Catch”. The worst part, though, was the flash and boom of lightening and thunder that seemed to occur directly above me when I was still 100 yards or so off the shore. Anyway, I made it back to the launch in one piece and headed back to the in-laws house…
I can’t wait to get back to Wissota again but the next time, I won’t play it that close with the weather. It would have been much more wise to have just tied up at the docks and waiting out that storm rather than trying to beat it to the launch. These summer showers pop up and are over just about as fast as they develop… be patient, wait ’em out if you have too….
