There is a fairly extensive scientific literature that describes the production of pheromones in fish, and the use of pheromones as a means of communication between members of the same species.
In 1941, Karl von Fritsch first described the use of “Schreckstoff” (fright stuff), which are injury-released or chemical-alarm pheromones. He observed that injured fish give off of an alarm signal to other fish, causing them to flee, apparently in the form of a hormone-like chemical released from their skin and open wounds.
