    Thanks everyone for the comments.

If you have a chance, grab an actual paper copy of the paper. There are a bunch of pics in there, and they’re MUCH better than the small one that is included in the electronic version of the story.

Jason, I would like to hear more about this.

Time to put my scientist cap on….

There is a fairly extensive scientific literature that describes the production of pheromones in fish, and the use of pheromones as a means of communication between members of the same species.

In 1941, Karl von Fritsch first described the use of “Schreckstoff” (fright stuff), which are injury-released or chemical-alarm pheromones. He observed that injured fish give off of an alarm signal to other fish, causing them to flee, apparently in the form of a hormone-like chemical released from their skin and open wounds. There is an excellent discussion of this topic by Bosio (Colorado State Univ) on this topic: Bosio paper.

well a body hook would be one thing but if you only hooked the lip.

according to some it does not hurt a fish to hook it in the lip.

so in saying this would they still give off the chemical-alarm pheromones?

    chew on that
