Well since the weather was well…too hot to bow hunt, I decided to take a friend of mine out on Wissota to try and find some walleyes. Our goal was to get some eaters for the pan and just to enjoy the nice “summer” day in October.
We headed out around 1:00 and by 2:00 we had our 4 eaters for the day. With the action just as hot as the temp, the rest of the afternoon flew by. We had stopped to buy walleye minnows but found the bait shop was out, so we were stuck with crappie minnows and the eyes didn’t seem to mind. We mainly pitched plain jig heads tipped with the minnows from 13′ of water up to 4′! We also did well casting cranks in the same location.
Within 5 minutes of arriving I had realized I forgot the camera when Jay boated the first eye…a very fat 17 1/2″ on a #5 shad rap in firetiger. The biggest eye that came into the boat was a healthy 22″ that I brought in tossing a wallydiver in black/silver color. Jay had another eye that he lost right next to the boat that we both got a look at and we guessed it to be around 23″ – 24″…the biggest eye I have seen in Wissota. That is always a good sign that the slot is working.
All in all it was one of the best days ever for me on the lake. We never did count all the fish but it was something like 35 walleye, 4 smallies in the 17″ – 18″ range, 1 northern about 30″ and a perch! What a great day NOT too be in the treestand!
