The FFW was off on a girls weekend, so I took advantage of the time to hit the water today.
I spent my time exploring some questions marks that roll around in my head when I’m not on the water. I’ve heard Jason Halfen say he’s also a victim of the Wissota ruminations. I’m not sure if my health plan covers this problem.
I started out searching for active fish on the main lake, by trolling cranks. I put together a good program by taking a close look at the map and keying in on the old river bed and working the edges. I found most the fish were on top of the break. I marked a lot of fish, but found certain pods were much more active.
2.4 to 2.8 was the most productive speed for me. I was surprised that when I crept toward 3.0, my hits decreased.
I tried a lot of different profiles and found the Cabela’s walleye runner in Kaleidoscope was a strong performer. I also did well with the shad raps.
I made a run up the river and found walleyes in every place I stopped to drop a line. It was just one of those days.
I decided to switch gears and pitch some bait. I was amazed at how light the bite was for with bait. The nibble and drop routine got real old in a hurry. I hooked a roaming 11″ crappie that was a welcome surprise.
I was on the water for about 8 hours and didn’t see a single tube, jet ski, or water ski. I don’t mind sharing the water with the non-fishing population, but it is a nice change to have the fisher-persons regain claim.
Get out there and wet a line.
