Sully and I tapped some “virgin” waters during week 6 of the Lake Wissota fishing league and finally found some decent smallies. With main lake temps in the low 80s, we wanted to target the coolest water we could find, and we finally found it as far up the river as I was comfortable running. Not only did we find cooler water, but we also found some considerable current, which always activates those river fish. Pitching bait on light jigs to the shorelines and working the bait back through deeper holes was the ticket for the smallies last evening. We also scratched out a few smaller fish pitching lipless cranks.
With time running out on us, we ran down into the lake to milk a spot that seems to always be full of smaller walleyes. The action was not fast and fuious, but dragging crawler halves on 1/16 oz jigs allowed me to fill out my league limit of eyes and to get a few on the board for Sully too. I think we ended up with 4 or 5 slot fish and the rest of our walleyes under the slot.
I ended up taking 2nd place for the night and Sully was in the top 10 I think. This marks three top-3 finishes for me during the six weeks of league this summer with four more weeks to go.
If you’re heading out on Wissota in the near future, find cool water and current to put some fish in the boat!
