Early season Wissota walleyes

Well, I broke the ice (so to speak) on Wissota this afternoon. I took a quick 3 hour trip to do a little scouting for upcoming guide trips, and was not disappointed.

First of all, the water is WARM for this time of year. 62-66 degrees. Last year at this time, we were just barely flirting with 60.

I spent all of this trip in the Chippewa River above the lake. There are fish to be had! Over 3 hours, we had 7 slot fish that were all between 15 and 16″, 3 short eyes, 2 nice slabs and one mid 20’s pike. All of our fish came on jig/minnow combos.

While we started the afternoon by pitching to shallow structure, we soon determined that the most active fish were a bit deeper. When the skies were high, we took fish by vertical jigging in 15-18′ off the edges of main river structure, and when things clouded up later in the afternoon, all of our bites came shallow on top of these structural features.

Look for some regular Wissota reports starting next week as my guiding schedule gets into full swing. If you’re looking for an entertaining time on the water, the bite is most definitely ON on Wissota!

    Alright Jason!

Hey…only one thing wrong with your guiding website….there isn’t a picture of ME on it!

nice report… sounds like you were finding fish in the same types of patterns/spots we hit last weekend. Wissota is a blast to fish – I’ve never gone home empty handed after a day on the water out there!

I know, I know…shame on me. I took one pic of our first crappie, but that’s it. Wait a week, and I think we’ll have some nice Wissota “fish porn” to gawk at!

I’ll echo what King185 said. Sounds like the same area we were in on Saturday. My journal had a note of just 59 degree water that day, so its warming fast.

I never got down to the 15-18′ level, most everything was 9-11′ for me. Jig and minnow did most damage but two nice fish succumbed to a jig/double leech setup.

That was my fist time on Wissota and with 10-12 eyes plus bonus gators and crappie, I’m definitely planning to come back!

    Thanks for the report!

Great report Jason. I fished some main lake structure last night as well. I did not bring any live bait. I was using paddle tails and ring worms. Pulled a few nice size fish largest being 17.5″. The slot fish sure are in great shape!! I ended up keeping 3 short fish for the pan.
