The Wissota walleye bite remains strong. Three of us hit the lake for a few hours of long-lining after work today. We were greeted by 4 hours of steady, wind-driven rain that worked its way through 3 sets of rain gear. It could have been worse, however….it could have been October rather than August.
We targetted two shallow areas near the Chippewa river inlet for our evening activities. We ran a full spread with two boards and two lines straight off the back and were busy for almost the entire time that we were out. Numerous “Wissota specials” (13.5 inchers) made it to the net, as well as two nice football-shaped smallmouths and a couple of slimers. Two well-fed slot walleyes made appearances as we were contemplating warm meals and dry sets of clothes.
Key baits tonight were gold deep little rippers run 80-90 feet back, clear glass SR5s and SR7s run 140-160 feet back, and jointed firetiger SR5s run 180-200 feet back. Speeds were slower than in past weeks, 2.2-2.6 mph (GPS). Fish were seen and caught on the shallow edges of the main river channel, 14-18 fow. Lots of fish seen shallower but we couldn’t convert them into biters. Water temperatures are moderating: we had water between 74 and 76 degrees in the Chip, which contrasts with 80-81 last week and mid 80’s about 2 weeks ago. Good fishing everyone!
