I made it out to Wissota this afternoon and evening, speending my first block of time away from my newborn. Main lake water temps are 61-62, and about a degree or two cooler in the Yellow and Chip. The Chip is running almost algae free, while the Yellow is still somewhat green and the main lake somewhat less so.
Now, for the fishing: nearly non-existant except for the sunset/twilight hour. We were really busy on shallow main lake sand (8-10′) with many many walleyes coming to hand, including several slot fish and a few that were stricken with head and tail disease (you know, that disease in which a fish’s head is too close to its tail). We caught fish on a variety of presentations, but dragging a jig and minnow (long cast, slow retrieve on the bottom) was the most productive, followed by jig and crawler and then slip-bobbering. Probably 8 boats total working this and one other similar main lake spot, and I saw all of them hoisting waldos into the boat during this magic hour of activity. I suspect that the activity might have been better earlier in the afternoon if there had been a cloud within 100 miles of the lake. Anybody else been out lately??
