landed a 662 inch sturgeon that was hooked in the tail.

    55 foot sturgeon?

The fish stories are flying this year!

I’m guessing the typo was to be 62″.

    Great photo!!

It might be over 700″ by next week.

I don’t know why Joe had that printed. It was suppose to be 66″.

Tim, you are now officially the “snag master”. All kiding aside, that looks like fun and it sounds like you guys were on the fish big time!

Yeah, the online Leader said 662, but the actual paper copy said 66 1/2, 662 sounds a bit more impressive. Tail-hook is just a bit more challenging, so I am okay with that, ha!! I can tell you that 14lb fireline can stand up to a-lot more than 14lb of pressure. I also have one arm that is larger than the other. We also had another large fish on spinning gear which I was unable to pull off the bottom. After a few minutes, I was asking Brian if he really wanted to waste any more walleye fishing time and pop she came unbuttoned so that was okay. Fun and memorable opener. I think Brian was going to post a few pics.

Great photo. Looks like you are trying to haul in the boat anchor. Next spring is all ready to far away.

I can add a couple more photos from our outing & edit the measurements for closer accuracy. The fish was 66.5″ with a girth of approximately 28″.The fish was hooked near the tail & took just short of about 2 hours to bring boatside from initial hookup using a 8’6″ trolling rod with 14lb fireline. The charts for length at 66.5″- girth of 28″ that Tim sent me suggest a weight of 82lbs. Tim I hope the fingers are getting full circulation back & your shoulders are getting to feel better. I kept telling Tim to pull harder & he showed me his fingers which were white due to lack of circulation. The walleye bite overall wasnt bad for us boating about 25 fish which almost all but 2 walleyes fell in the 14″-18″ slot along with a mix of a smallmouth bass, 3 pike & 1 tagged 18″ Spotted muskie. It turned out to be a beautiful day. I was glad to get back out on the home pond again avoiding all the political doings & just possibly share some memorable experiences with a few buddies out for the opening day. Good luck fishing this season all.

Tim stated it was his first sturgeon & I beleive it made a lasting impression on him. It may also be tough to beat, but there are fish I have had others bring boatside on Wissota larger than this. I think if he would decide to target them he would opt to use a bit heavier tackle. I was quite amazed on how much pressure he was putting on that fish & it would come just under the boat out of sight then right back down & basically glued itself to the bottom. Hence the likely dumb look on my face in the photo. Of course I poked at him a couple times telling him to put more pressure on it so we could possibly get back to walleye fishing. He then showed me his uncirculative white fingers & asked if I might like to play with it for a bit,but I declined as it was hooked up on his side of the boat. I felt more up to the task of keep chasing it down when it would decide to go where it wanted, when it wanted so other boats might not get between us & Tims fish.
