Today was forecast to be the best day of the week, so I snuck out of work early to hunt crappies on Wissota. Water temp was about 46 which is cooler than when I was out there last week.
I did manage to scrouge up a few crappie and kept 3 ranging from 10 to 12 inches for dinner this weekend. More notable though, was the (accidental) walleye action. I had 4 under the slot, 4 in the slot (15 to 17″), and one 20″ male that released his sperm in my boat. At first I wasn’t sure what it was ’cause it looked like a white ribbon. I was expecting a white milky substance.
I’m seeing some really healthy looking, nice size walleye. I hope that means the overall population of good size fish is growing. Maybe it’s just because it’s spawning time and they’re a little more bunched up. When I do come across them, they seem to be grouped up in a very small area (where I expect pre-spawn crappies to school up).
The DNR guys were launching their boats as I was taking mine out. They should be getting some really good survey data.
