Wishing yesterday was just a bad dream.

I was really hoping that i would wake up this morning and find out yesterday was just a bad dream, but unfortunately that’s not how this thing called life works. Yesterday morning we had to make the call that sent our first boy, Boone, on to the squirrel filled hereafter. I’ve read other people’s posts on this but still wasn’t in anyway prepared for just how hard it was and has been the last 24 hours. Though he wasn’t really a hunting dog he loved keeping squirrels and bunnies out of the yard and was a loyal companion in the home. He really was a great dog and is resting now with one of his favorite squirrel chew toys at his side in a flower garden we prepared for him this spring where he can keep an eye on his yard and we can try to find comfort that he is no longer in pain. Until we meet again good boy.

    Boone, July 25 2009 – August 6 2022.

That’s always a tough time. IP Boone. About the only thing I have done that was tougher was pulling the plug on my Mother.

I will say that as a person goes through life you get a lot of well-wishes from friends, co-workers, and acquaintances who mean well, but when people respond to threads like this it’s truly felt.

It absolutely sucks. The one thing I keep telling others who go through this since I went through it about a year ago is to feel whatever way you want to feel and you’re not wrong for doing so. Anyone who would react with “dude, it’s a dog, get over it” can go &*$% themselves. There’s plenty that have felt what you’re feeling right now so don’t fight it, let it all out and let it all go, most of us on here have too.

    RIP Boone, good boy!

I put my 5 year old lab down 2 months ago. It’s hard and it’s sad and I’m sorry you find yourself in the middle of it.

My buddy calls owning a dog the best example of a Faustian Bargain. He’s right

Sorry to hear of your family’s loss. Nice touch with the various pictures. The one with Boone in the kitchen is great. That “look” is precious. I may have to start tracking down some old pics of my oldest lab. We may “part ways” this next year. sad

That was one (of many) of his favorite squirrels and thats about what they looked like after a couple days. He would be so proud after disembowling them and getting the squeaker out of the tail. His last one was the only one he didn’t completely destroy, almost like he knew he wanted it (mostly) intact to go with him.

Thanks everyone, I did find the picture I took of the real squirrel he did catch in his younger days. He really wanted to bring him in the house. He could out run them back in the day, he just couldn’t turn and cut like they could.

The pain you feel proves how much love there was and how real the connection was both ways….

Went through it in February, and it still hurts. Nothing is ever easy about the loss.

Sorry for your loss. Like others I also went through this last year with my lab. They really take a part of your heart and we all think we are tough enough to where it won’t bother us like it does, but it does. RIP Boone.
