Wisconsin/Minnesota Border Water Ice Fishing Question

I fish in Wisconsin sometimes though I reside in Minnesota, and I know that I can have three lines through the ice over there on a WI license, and I assume folks from Sconny can have 3 on border waters like the St. Croix and Mississippi, but can I have 3 lines in on the St. Croix with a MN license?

Talking ice fishing, not open water. I know for open water that 2 lines are allowed on these waters.

    Thanks for your help.

Summer is no different on the border waters.

    Here’s how it goes.

You follow the rules of the state you are fishing in. Where you live and which license you purchased makes no difference.

WI side of the river, 3 lines. MN side, 2 lines.

I’m waiting for BK’s drivers license analogy. wave

So if I have a MN fishing license but fish the WI side I can drop three lines?

Also, is there some kind of fence to show where the border is? laugh

If you are from Mn even if you have a Wi. Lic. YOU also HAVE TO HAVE a Mn. Lic. to fish boarder waters… …rrr
    PS Right BK.?

    No D/L analogy today. ;)

If you have a gps in your boat use that. Otherwise both Dnr’s consider the center of the channel the boarder. (at this time…don’t ask.)

    Time for the D/L analogy….

Specifically to your question…no matter which license you’re in possession of, we are allow to fish three hooks on the WI side.

I have a MN D/L, it’s good in both States…when crossing the river into WI and the speed limit is 55 mph in MN and 70 mph in WI, I can drive 70 MPH once I get to the WI side. I’m following the WI laws, they won’t ticket me for following the law.

RRR they changed this a number of years ago. Back then MN wouldn’t allow 3 lines on any part of the river for a MN licensed angler. WI wouldn’t cite an angler with 3 even if they had a MN license.

There was a quiet change in MN rules…might have been an angler cited in WI waters by MN CO’s and the angler asking to be tried in the State he was ticketed in(?)

Wasn’t there talk of boarder waters being written so the laws are the same?

Just follow the regulations for the state that you are in and you will be fine.

If you are a MN resident with a MN license you HAVE to follow MN regulations.
    WISCONSIN–MINNESOTA Regulations:

Two lines with a single lure or bait on each are permitted. If fishing with one line, you may use
    two baits.

Took that from the reg book.
If you buy a WI license you can use 3.
    Check the books!!

WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Follow the laws of the state you are in. MN side of the river, 2 lines. WI side, 3. On a border water the license you have does not determine what laws you follow, it just allows you to fish both sides without having to buy a NR license for the other state.

“If fishing regulations differ between the border states, what regulations do I follow?
You must obey the regulations of the state in which you are fishing. More permissive regulations are limited
to that state’s waters. Using number of lines as an example: In Wisconsin waters anglers may use 3 lines,
but in Minnesota waters anglers only may use 2 lines.”

Taken directly from Page 44 of the MINNESOTA fishing regulations. Problem solved.
