Tough choice for Dekker, love of the game vs love of the money. IMO, the money will be there and likely more waiting another year. We’re not talking football where it’s more likely a quality underclassmen could suffer a career ending injury before reaching the pros and a big payday. That rarely happens in basketball. I doubt the pro game will be as fun for him and fans in return will not show him the love as much as gets here.

For the past few years here it’s been talk about Dekker this and Dekker that. But I watched all the games. Yes, he was a presence on the floor but stellar consistent play I didn’t see. Many games he was nearly invisible. The Duke game was a great example. If he showed up better things would have happened for Bucky.

Take the money young man! 2 reasons: 1) The obvious is a career ending injury and 2) There is always the possibility that his game goes in the tank. If his “stock” drops he may just find himself playing in Europe. He is a darn good player now and his “stock” is high so I think he needs to take advantage of that. Look at what Tyus is doing. His stock is way high so I am sure he will take the $$$ and enter the draft…RR

Yeah, you’re talking a gauranteed few million a year. If he’s a smart kid, he only has to play a few years to be set for life. Even on one years salary, he could go back to school any time he wants. Seems like a no brainer if you’re projected in the top 15 or so.

Sucks for Badger fans, but you have to be realistic. I seriously doubt any of us would pass up a sure thing payday like that.

Stay in school young man, 3 reasons. 1) Has a tauted player like Dekker ever had a career ending injury? If so, probability is close to zero. 2) Has a tauted player like Dekker ever tanked? It’s more likely he’ll only get bigger, stronger and better. Dropping all the way to Europe has to have a probability close to zero. 3)A no brainer would be foolishly being nearsighted about the money. Do you think Ron Dayne would have the business opportunities that’ll last him a lifetime if he didn’t come back and earn his Heismann? I think he’ll make more off his endorements in the long run than the money left. Think about Dekker. You can only be a kid in school once in a lifetime. Think of the should’ve, could’ve, would’ves he’ll think about for years looking back at the UW record books. There’s lots of rich elbows yet to be rubbed for him in the UW community = $$$ for him in the future which sounds like a pretty solid life insurance should maybe an injury knock him out of the pros early. A legacy lasts forever.

I respect your opinion but you are in the minority on this one. You are speaking as a Wisky fan who wants to see Wisky continue to win. Injury? Most college players will actually buy some sort of insurance policy if they plan on playing another year instead of entering a draft. Injuries happen (especially knee injuries…) and if they do happen they can lose MILLIONS. Trust me Dekker is listening to both his family and wanna’ be agents concerning this choice. I for one hope he stays simply because I don’t think he is ready for an 82 game season. Can they drop off? If you say no then you don’t watch many college sports cause it happens every year. Legacy? C’mon man, your blind if you think these kids give a sh*t about their “legacy”! Show…me…the…money baby!!!

My point exactly, he’s too whimpy yet (aka. Greg Owens) for the NBA and needs to grow and develop. I’m not speaking as a Wisky fan though I am one. I could give a rip who plays next year but I’ve watched every UW game for years and many many others. Again, watch Dayne run around campus and we’ll see whose blind about leaving a legacy. Stardome is guaranteed for Dekker at UW, the NBA is a long shot. An immature kid can blow the initial 2-3 million a kid like Dekker will get from that first contract but it may be his last one. Related business earnings built off a legacy will be granted regardless of any success in the pros even if he decides to forego the NBA completely after another year. Sounds like a good insurance policy to me. That money will keep on coming in year after year even if he suffers that rare knee injury in basketball. Knee repairs are so good now anyway that he could be playing again 9 months later anyway.

You just said it…2-3 million dollars. He will NEVER make that in his first 20 years of a “real job” even if this legacy thing that you speak of works out for him (which is not as big of a thing as you are making it out to be. You and Sid Hartman would get along well!). Take the money now and go back to school later if need be. We are beating a dead horse here. I’m out…

he’s as nba ready as he’s probably going to get. if you are guaranteed a first round pick, you go as a rule of thumb. thats nearly 2 mil guaranteed at a minimum.

talking as if you can’t play in the nba for the love of the game is absurd. to get the opportunity to play/practice with the best of the best and be coached by the best of the best is what you dream about.
