I fished last night hoping to hook up with some larger fish. I spoke to some of the fisherman coming in from the daytime and they all reported a slow tough bite. I started around 5:30 and hit a current seam in 12-16 FOW. The fish were very aggressive and really smacking the jig right from the start boating about a dozen fish with 3 keepers from 5:30 – 6:30. I had a hair jig and minnow on one rod and a chart/orange core moxi on the other. Vertical jigging downstream caught most fish but did pick up a couple dragging back up stream. The jig and minnow caught 3/4 of the fish also.
Unfortunately things dramatically slowed after that. I fished multiple spots until 11:00 p.m. throwing stick baits, dragging jigs and pitching plastics but only boated 3 more fish with 18″ being the biggest.
With the snow and ice on the shoreline, low water levels and a water temp of 37 degrees it seemed much more like the first week of Marh rather than the first week of April. I feel like we might have a slower and more stretched out spawn this spring but we’ll see. One thing for sure is that no matter the water temp or weather, the fist couple weeks of April is a magical time and I would take any oportunity given to hit the water right now.
Here’s a few eaters from last night.
