Lake Wisconsin Saugers

Well we got out again this weekend. Friday afternoon Larry Pakyz came along and we managed to put four nice saugers in the boat for him to take home. All fish came by dragging hair jigs or live bait rigs with colored hooks slowly upstream.
Saturday my brother Paul from Winona came home to try his luck in my boat on the Lake Wisconsin head waters as well.
Quite a wind we had to deal with as the day went on. We did find some active saugers and by changing up on these fish, we managed to put a limit in the boat. We started out fishing live bait rigs with colored hooks. After awhile, they didn’t want that anymore. Switched to regular hooks and caught one or two more, then switched to floating jig heads and caught a few more and finally put on a #7 rapala.
No pattern other than pulling bait rigs, three ways and stick sinkers up stream and constantly changing what was on the end of the leader. Seems like once they looked at it once, they didn’t want it anymore.
The fish were somewhat scattered and came from several areas along a stretch in the river which had all of the following: a running slough intersecting the main channel, a hole which dropped into 23′ of water, back currents with nice current edges, a few sand bars which extended out into the deep water and plenty of snags to keep a guy busy.
In the morning the weather was kind of nice but by afternoon, the wind was down right furious.
All in all, it turned out to be a pretty good outing and Paul ended up catching his first ever limit of five on this system.
