Lake Wisconsin Saugers

Knowing the night before, that the weather was not going to be very nice, I thought of one guy who is usually willing to go out fishing with me anyway. So, I put in a phone call to my long time fishing buddy Dick Straub. A bit of arm twisting and he was committed to going early as long as we were back in time to see the Badgers play against Michigan St. in Big Ten basketball tournament game.
Depending on your opinion, weather conditions were either bad, worse than bad or downright brutal on Lake Wisconsin this past weekend.
We left for the head of the lake at 5:30am with strong East winds and a morning temp. of 21 degrees.
After a hour or two of figuring out how and where, we finally started catching some pretty nice saugers. To us, it appeared as though we did the best when vertically jigging along the 16′ deep edge of a hole that dropped into 23′ of water. This hole along a bluff runs about 200 yards and has a nice current break going thru it. A plain orange or orange/yellow 1/4oz jig tipped with a large fathead and a stinger hook worked best for us today. Plastics just were not cutting it on our lines.
By 10am, we had six in the box and put back a 21″ sauger as well. After checking several other spots up river with no luck, we came back to our original location and put two more in the live well. By 1:30pm, the east wind was getting worse and we decided to head home and get the fish cleaned up before the game started.
Despite the weather, which reached a high of 36 degrees and winds that made boat positioning difficult at best, we were happy with our catch and glad we made the effort to go out. And really glad that we had on all of our best long underwear, coveralls, coats, gloves, hats and just about anything else we could wear to ward of the cold.
