Wiring problem with Humminbird Helix 7

I had to extend my power cord to my Helix 7 Humminbird fish finder. I ran a red and black 16 gauge wire direct to a dedicated battery from the existing lines leading from the head. Almost immediately the wires got warm, then hot. What did I do wrong?

Second problem, to check my Helix 7 I hook it directly to a new battery. Won’t turn on. Is there a fuse within the unit that may have blown? I check the in line fuse. That was a 3.5 and was ok.

12 gauge wire is recommended, with an inline 3 amp fuse on the positive wire within a foot from the battery…wire should run all the way back to the starting battery. If I’m remembering correctly from when I did mine last year.

Few questions. Which wire was the fuse connected to? Where along the wire was the fuse connected?(nearest the battery or nearest the unit) Which battery posts was the red and black wires connected? How long is the wire?

I use 12g as well. When I was running smaller gauge from my previous unit my Helix drew too much power and would actually shut off. I would switch to 12g
