Winter Trolling motor freezing

I use WD 40 to keep my trolling motor shaft from freezing when stowed.

WD40 don’t like to spray in really cold temps… So you waste a bunch.

    Is there a better product.
Maybe something a little more fish friendly too?

    Silicone spray?

    Silicone spray?

Silicone spray for sure. However I’m not sure it’ll spray any better at cold temps. WD40 is not a good cold weather lubricant but it does a great job of displacing water. Although it tends to gum up over time.

A silicone based oil or grease designed for cold temps would be good. Can be quite spendy though.

Responses with experience preferred, specific products would also be nice.

To be clear, WD40 works great to prevent freezing. Just hoping for a better, and more fish friendly

Ok, I’ve used DuPont brand silicone spray on the shaft of my old PowerDrive to aid in the stow and deployment, and it worked great. First time I deployed it it slid flawlessly and I dang near pushed myself into the water. I didn’t use it in freezing temps, but it worked in early and late season just fine.
I’ve also sprayed it on the top of the tailgate of my pickup that has a poly bedline cover over it, because the rubber foam gasket of the tonneau cover freezes onto the poly and the silicone really helped with that. Which reminds me, I haven’t done that yet this year.

I was thinking buying the gallon and apply with squirt bottle.

Yep. Spray the wd40 on a rag and wipe it on. Pretty easy to keep the can inside, warm to.

I just bought a gallon of wd40 and a cheap plastic spray bottle. Should work fine.

Mike, I’m talking about applying this while on the water.

This thread could be comedy gold but I don’t want to get banned from this site.

Good luck keeping your shaft lubed this winter, FBRM.

I would have thought that small cans of WD and just keep them warm inside your coat?

Ignore me, I don’t fish in the winter.

Spray bottle worked good today. Will see what happens when it gets cold. Good bite also

We used vegetable oil in a pinch on the Rainy River and it lasted surprisingly long. Just dumped it on a rag and wiped it on.

Buy some of the r/v antifreeze and a plastic spray bottle. When the trolling motor ices up, give it a good spray. Speaking from experience. propylene glycol is the active ingredient I think. Enviro friendly and even food safe.

I picked some up today. Looking forward to replacing WD40 with some non-toxic!
    Thanks.
    Will report back when vetted.

I don’t know about this for the trolling motor but we use reel magic or seafoam deep creep on the rods and reels to help from freeze up and works great..

Hard to believe it took until mid January to give a follow-up review, but the cold temps are here and RV antifreeze has been working great.
    Up until this morning.

    -5 and bottle is slush.

Warming it up now on the dash.

Hope it stays good the rest of the day.

It didn’t slush yesterday yesterday, only a few degrees cooler today.

Don’t believe it is good to -50 as it says on the bottle. But it is good to 0 for sure. Doesn’t leave residue and appears non toxic to environment.

I’ll continue to use it and recommend it.

Thanks for the follow up. I was wondering what you ended up using.

The slush is because -50 is the burst point not the freeze point. If I remember right slush can start forming at temps as warm as about 10 degrees.

Not cheap but if you can find CorrosionX HD it is a lubricant and a water proofer stays put once you put it on. Use it to water proof electronics comes in liquid or spray on. Spray on an electric motor dunk it underwater with speed controller and battery and it will still run just fine and not corrode later.

Makes sense when you consider what it is really used for )

There is -100 RV antifreeze that should stay fully liquid well below zero. If you get out to the boat and that stuff is froze you may want to take the day off!

Anyone have the Ulterra with auto stow and deploy? Have you had a problem with it working when the shaft freezes up? Looking into making the purchase but do some pool 4 fishing throughout winter months.
