I was holding off on posting anything about this little winter project of mine till I completed the first ’round, but after seeing what it looked like after tonight I couldn’t help myself.
Somewhere not long before Christmas I decided I wanted to try my hand at making my own wooden fishing lures, just seemed like it would be fun and cool to catch a fish with a lure I made from scratch. So I bought some ‘whittlers’ wood just to see how hard it would be to even carve out a lure shape. After successfully whittling away a few that seemed to look more or less like a lure I began looking at ways to more effectively make them with more repeatable results, I hope. I knew I wanted to use thru wires, so I eventually landed on a process that I liked and seems to be working so far. That said these two initial designs have yet to be tested in actual, on the water situations, I have only tested then in a test tank (AKA our bathtub). My first test batch of these two colors just needs a clear coat finish and then rings/hooks added and they are ready to go. I do have a few more ready that tomorow I will start attempting to paint in a firetiger pattern.
I have found during this process that there are several places you can purchase pre made bodies and lips and them finish to your desire, but I figured what fun is that. The only part of these lures I ‘cheated’ on are they eyes, I didn’t want to try painting those on so bought pre-made prismatic ones. Make the lips has proven to be a real pain though, so I may start buying those pre made if for nothing else for the consistency from lip to lip.
I have already found parts of this process I would do differently and/or tweak next time, but that was pretty much the purpose of these first ones. My plan is to spend the summer fiddling with these and the design/process so that when things slow down again next winter and I’ve got more time on my hands i can really kick out a quality batch or two.
