March madness is around the corner

Depth color lure ice conditions
Just got back this afternoon. We fished Friday morning through noon today. Friday and Saturday we did well. 10 guys over those days managed 21 masters which I feel was good after the reports from last year. Four fish just over 30″. Silver/blue Live Target lipless crankbaits and pink spoons were our go to lures. Sunday and today were slow. We managed several fish in that 24-28″ mark but the bite was light those days. Really had to coax them versus Friday and Saturday they hammered the lures. Often times not seeing them on the vexilar before they bit. I had a 12″ extension and only one time near pressure ridge I was not able to get through. I would say roughly 45″ of ice. Good snow condition for sled and never seen so many trucks out as far as they were. Going to be a slushy mess soon if they get warm temps. Overall great trip.
This Colorado low pounded us. Last night, and still snowing today. Will be 10-25” of snow, with heavy drifting as the winds are still up. Hwy 75 from the border to winnipeg still closed. Tracks will be a must if you don’t want to shovel.
Hey Cameron,
The whole lake got that? Were heading up Wed morning and going out of Grand Beach. I heard Winnie got a pile but the lake did also?
Thank

East side not near as bad as the west. West got pounded. Heavy wet snow.
Any updates today on the conditions now that the storm has mostly cleared? Hoping to come up there this weekend, but the snow might have ruined those plans.
Cameron, Have a report on the actual snow totals? Your post above said 10-25″ from the other day. Given how heavy of snow that it sounds like, that would make a wheeled atv or ranger pretty difficult to get around with. Wish I had tracks, but unfortunately they are out of my budget.
For what it’s worth, one of my good buddies was up there on a “business” trip (his job is to take investors vacationing on remote trips). He said that the lake wasn’t as bad as he has seen it before, but quite a mess. They utilized track vehicles and said those who did not were digging out fairly regularly.
On a positive note, he said the bite was decent. Not anything fast and furious…but they managed 6 fish over 27” in 2 days.
Shoot, not what I was hoping to hear. Would be no fun digging out all the time.

It hit the lake at an angle. East side from beaconia north got almost nothing. Chalet on the west side took a full hit. 10”. That said, there are already packed trails, and if your cautious with your atv, you should be fine with wheels. Rangers, I would be more concerned about. Would be pretty tough to get a wheelhouse anywhere, and it’s tough on trucks. Guys are getting to the mouth, at a cost of tires, getting buried, etc. Roads are clear and dry, temps are still pretty cold.
Thanks for the information Cameron. I was up there two weeks ago and had a great trip. I am fortunate enough to be able to come again this next Tuesday through Thursday. All of the information you have provided is very much appreciated. We sled from the South Beach Casino down the Brokenhead River. Conditions were great two weeks back and sounds like they are still going to be good after the storm as cool temperatures have slowed the melt if there has been any.
Not sure if anyone is looking for an update but we just returned from LW this afternoon. The trip was a lot different this time around. We fished two hours on Monday evening when we got up there and managed 10 fish. Tuesday and Wednesday we averaged 20 fish for two guys each day with only one being a Master. We did have 5-6 that were in the 24-27″ range. We talked to several people who stated they had the same bite-very slow. We moved very often when getting no marks on the sonar. There was truck, atv and sled traffic most everywhere. For those that enter on the east side the Pruden Creek entrance is now all mud. One stuck so bad they needed a wrecker. Warm temps will continue to make things sloppy. Tight lines.
were side by sides able to move around the lake, or snowmobiles the best choice?

Either. Snow pack is hard pack now, so it’s a little warm on sliders. Either will work.
Thanks Cameron, heading upon Saturday, hope the weather and fish cooperate.

Weather looks mostly stable, some snow forecast for the weekend, but only a couple inches. Temps have been stable, not getting much above freezing during the day, and still cold at night. Bring double extensions. Just in case.
