I should be making a trip next season to the city of Winnipeg with my wife. I want to ice fish while we are up there as it looks amazing, but she wants to relax and chill out as she don’t like to fish ( I know,I know. I have tried). Is there a resort I could goto that would keep the wife happy? I don’t mind traveling a few hours to get a great experience. Thanks for any info you can share

Not a resort, but the Canalta Inn in Selkirk is very nice and clean. It has a pool and hot tub as well. It’s where I stayed this year, and will be back there again next year.

Canalta is nice. Selkirk not very big, but your only 20 min to winnipeg. Pm me if you need ideas or need info.

Check out Lakeview Gimli Resort in Gimli (west side).

Looking to do this trip this winter so I though I would refresh this thread.

Recommendations for places to stay, gear, truck vs sled vs snobear etc.

Looking around the February or March timeframe.

Sounds like Selkirk is the place to stay. Also curious if you can fish the river in that time frame.

thanks in advance for all the info

It changes from year to year. All depends on the weather and snow pack. You can stay at south beach casino( books a year in advance FYI), canalta in Selkirk which allows you to hit either side of the lake or the river, or numerous b&b’s. This lake breaks things. Plain and simple. Sled or snowbear or quad is preferred over truck, pressure ridges will limit your travel with a truck. Bring at least a 12-16” extension.

Any other questions, ask away. I live up here.

I’ll add as well, zebras have changed the lake dramatically. The aggressive crank bite is mostly gone. The lake is much clearer and after spending a season watching on my livescope, the fish have changed their reactions to presentations dramatically.

Thanks for all the info! Is it mostly a big spoon bite now since the water is clearing up? Seems like there should still be some dirty water down by the river?

How recently has that changed? I was last up there 2 years ago. Will I be in for a major change in tactics this winter?

Big spoons, also flutter spoons. They hit cranks, I have gone to size 5 cranks.

Ah ok so you are saying there is a need to downsize the cranks?

I would bring smaller cranks too. Some days the big ones shy away from a large crank.

Thanks for the info! Any recommendations for rods?

Med or med hvy is fine. Being barbless you don’t want a super stiff fast action rod, most med action rods are fine, med hvy for cranks.

Frozen/salted shiners still the ticket up there?

Yep. Live have their place too. Be aware, the rules about minnows have changed. Rule use to be all bait, frozen or live must be discarded on the shore upon leaving the lake due to AIS. The rule now is all live bait, and any frozen bait that has come into contact with the water must be discarded before leaving the lake. So if your using frozen, don’t put lake water into the tub to thaw. All live minnows must be discarded on the lake.

Anyone made the journey across the border lately? Not trying to start a political discussion just looking for feedback on the process. Still itching to get up there from Minnesota this winter.

You still need the negative pcr test for now. Suppose to drop the requirement next week, but we will see.

Tons of snow. Tracks only or shovel all day. Bite is tough, but generally is this time of year.
