Wife and I are starting to really plan our winnipeg trip. It’ll be our 20 year anniversary. Looking to do a 2 or 3 day guided ice trip up there, but also looking to stay somewhere nice. She is all in foe the ice fishing, but said at the end of the day she wants a nice bed, nice restaurant etc. So, just looking for recommendations on guide and lodging. Don’t care about catching tons of fish, this is a big fish goal trip.

There are a couple outfitters that have licensed ice castles on the ice now, gaune fishing and kannuk outfitters. Kris gaune is an excellent guide as well. My top choice would be guided by bruin outfitters. Matt Cornell is a consumate professional with a proven history of putting people on big fish. If the castle is a no go for your wife, your lodging options are south beach casino, or the canalta hotel in Selkirk. Canalta gives you the option of hitting either side of the lake, south beach is on the east side. Need any more info, feel free to pm me, I live up here.

How much if at all has the fishing declined up there after the word got out?

As far as lodging, the definition of “nice” is a bit subjective. No offense to the area, but there just isn’t a lot of choices that fit into my “nice” category. The best I’ve found is the Canalta in Selkirk. Selkirk has some nice options for eating (both sit down and fast food). There is a Boston Pizza which we enjoy going to and it’s right next door to the Canalta as well as a Walmart and Canadian Tire. I would have no problem staying at the Canalta/Selkirk with my wife.

There are handful of nice cabins you can rent as well.
Another option you and your wife might enjoy is renting a snow bear to fish out of.

Word got out a long time ago. My first trip up there was over 20 years ago now.
Has fishing declined some? Yes but still lots of big fish to be had.

I’d strongly disagree with you! In a friendly way. The commercial quota is still putting out millions of pounds a year, no more keeping one over, this past winter it was hard to get a limit of 4, lots of overs. The zebras have really cleaned up the water, so it’s a bit more challenging, but this season was really good.

I wouldn’t disagree with you Cam. jester

When nobody was out on the lake it was easy picking. Like you said just more of a challenge with the amount of people that fish it now and changing water conditions.

Blackwater Cats Outfitters (Donovan Pearse) is the real deal. I’ve gone with him the past 5 years and had incredible fishing. You stay at the Canalta Inn in Selkirk which is a really nice, comfortable hotel as well.

I’d also add, to look up Blackwater Cats on Instagram or facebook for an idea of the caliber of fishing.

X2 on the Canalta in Selkirk is a very nice hotel. The location is nice with stores and restaurants all nearby.

We’ve used Icebound Excursions the last 2 winters. Matt does a great job of putting you on fish. We haven’t had any problems getting our limits either year plus serveral bigger fish.
