Going to check off one of my “Bucket List” adventures and need some advice from you guys. What’s your go to flutter spoon choice and your rattle bait choice for Big Windy?

The Scheels stores up north, Fargo, Grand Forks etc. all have Winnipeg sections where you can find most of the baits a guy needs. I would recommend 3-4 of each, Jackals, Live Targets, RJ spoons, Pelican spoons, Kamooki’s etc…You will find drilling a lot of holes is more important then having all the custom baits, once you hit the right fish it doesn’t seem to matter what “particular bait” you have. I would also recommend getting a bait button and tipping your baits with minnow heads. It is a great destination that is a lot of work but can be super rewarding!

Spoons are still effective, the reel bait rattle stix have been particularly effective. Purple punch. The rattle chamber is perfect on those.

TBH I’ve never heard of this product before but after watching a couple videos, it’s really slick and I’ll be buying one for sure!
Cameron whitePosts: 516January 7, 2020 at 12:05 pm #1904114Hummingbird released their lake map now, so if you run lowrance or bird you can get actual maps. Quite eye opening.
January 7, 2020 at 12:35 pm #1904125The Blue/Chrome Lindy Glow streak is awesome up there as well. That bait has a really loud rattle to get the attention of any greenback in the area.
January 7, 2020 at 2:48 pm #1904161Dane Heid here, owner/operator of DH Custom Baits. I’m going to piggy back off of Jgross. Finding fish should be your first and most important venture while you’re on big windy. Once you do, regardless of what bait you’re using, don’t overwork it.
With that said, I carry entirely too much tackle with me. One tray holds RJ Spoons, Slender spoons, Rattle Stix and some of my custom painted flutter spoons. Slender spoons work incredibly well up there.
My other tray consists of a lot of live targets, jackalls, northland rippin shads and many custom painted options.
In my trips, it seems that one bait seems to always shine over the rest. It’s either a lipless bite or a spoon bite. Figuring out which one is part of the fun.
Good luck up there! I’ll be returning the second week of March.

January 7, 2020 at 8:18 pm #1904295Thanks guys. Planning on heading up around the 1st week of March or so.
January 8, 2020 at 2:44 pm #1904516Make sure to take a couple pink & white blade baits from B Fish N tackle and pink & white Sebile Virbato. Def pelican spoons and rippin raps,
Cameron whitePosts: 516January 9, 2020 at 4:32 am #1904685I stick with the tn-60 jackall and the small size live target. They will smack big baits too.
Aaron mccarthyPosts: 12January 9, 2020 at 10:00 am #1904758What rj spoons are you using? The trolling flutter spoons or the lightweight or heavy weight spoons? Just curious what your using
MNBOWHUNTINPosts: 158January 10, 2020 at 12:03 pm #1905096I’ve caught fish on just about every bait up there. Last year I caught one on a white lake trout tube, tried it towards the end of the trip, I think I will be using it more this year.
That being said, the LT and Jackall rattle baits always seem to be the go to. Firetiger, whites, blue/silver, purple, pink. All work, just depends on the year on which color is preferred.
The bait buttons are a must. We have also gotten live minnows the last couple years. Just seem to outfish frozen minnows for us, even though we are mostly pinching them in half anyways.
