Anyone fish Lake Winnebago at all? Even if you have only once. Its more than I have. Im thinking about doing some fishing out their this year and wanted some ideas. Where in particular is Lake Poygan on the Winnebago chain?

    Hougie,

I can’t answer your question on Poygan but I can tell you that Winnebago is a HOT fishery! I don’t have a ton of experience (2 trips) and I’ll have to dig out a map to better explain some spots but I know of a hump just outside of the Oshkosh marina and some areas on the NE shore area. Lots of big rigs and planer board action out there but there is SOOO much space. I’ll get back to you with more when I’m able. Both trips were in June.

Okay, the map I’m looking at indicates that Poygan is on the northern end of the chain and has promising indications for walleye and perch. It’s Poygan, Winneconne, Butte des Morts, then Winnebago. I’d need an actual road map to suggest the best way to get there so I’ll let you take that assignment.

As for my spots on Winnebago, NW of Roe Point, almost straight out from the Oshkosh marina is a 6′ hump that has produced for me while trolling Shad Raps, #7’s. When I was there, the jigging guys weren’t doing nearly as well…………..sunny day with a 15mph chop on the top, about 80 degrees air temp, water temp unknown, barometer unknown. That hump is the only place I tried on the western shore.

On the eastern shore, I’ve spent my time north and south of the Calumet County Park Harbor, with the better action coming from the south between Calumet and Stockbridge. Plenty of eater sized walleye and perch up to 15″ throughout that whole shoreline. I’ve had bites on inline spinners, jig & plastics, and trolling Shad Raps, #5 and #7’s, #5’s being the slightly better edge. Shallow Shad Rap #5’s also produced on shallower breaks along the eastern shore.

I’ve only been out there twice and had limited time to utilize so this is the best I can give you at this time. I may be heading there in June again myself so I’ll be sure to let you know what happens if I do.

    Get out there…………….you’ll like it!

    Hey Hougie,

I just “eBayed” some Wally Divers to a person in Oshkosh………..I’ll see if I can get some more “local info” for you on time of year and techniques used, and of course, where to use them! Keep an eye on the thread and oh yeah……………..no thanks necessary. All the info you guys have given me over the last year…………….I figure I still owe you about 10,000 or so bits of information before we’re about even! LOL! It’s my pleasure!

    Hey Hougie…

I’ve fished it a bit; fished Merc Nationals there last June and a Fleet Farm tournament in August. My fishing partner and her husband live on the NW end of the lake. Depending on when you’re going, give a holler if you want some info.

    Thanks Jenn,

I might run over their on Sunday and fish near Winneconne and fish around Poygan and Winneconne. I figure that would be a good place to start. Im not sure if those fish have spawned yet or not but Im curious. Im mostly interested in fishing the areas on Lake Poygan. This early in the year Im wondering what techniques are good. Im wondering when the trolling bite gets going. I appreciate all the the help.

Hougie, sorry I didn’t post earlier – just got busy and am very forgettful. I fish 5/4 & 5/5 on Winnebago. Work shoreline, breaks, and reefs. My partner and I picked one nice walleye on Long Tail reef south of Oshkosh. There was a MWS tournament out of Oshkosh on Sunday. Five fish 21+ pounds won it. Second was 13+ pounds. What I heard, the better weights came from the upper lakes Poygan and Winneconnie. We have been getting alot of rain here, and the walleyes should be flushing down into Winnebago. I think we just need a few warm days and the bite will really pick up. Hope to get on Winnebago on Saturday 5/11 for a while. Got Mom’s day on Sunday.
