Finally got the chance to get my rear end out on the water with the rig this year. Decided to head to Bago after watching the weather marine forecast for Lake Michigan and saying nope. Gave Z-man a ring on short notice and he was able to meet me at Blackwolf landing to an almost full lot on a Wednesday. Don’t people work anymore?
Talked to a few people. Some had limits some had zero. Interesting. Plan for the day jig the reefs and soak crawlers and leeches. So started the reef hopping. Nice chop on the water also.
Ed started off with one plastic about a 17incher. I put a crawler out to soak and started casting a firetiger flicker. Had a couple short strikes then connected with a good 16 incher. Ed picked up another. I put my casting rod down as I saw my cork go under to miss the fish. Saw my crankbait was about a foot below water then a walleye t-boned it, I missed it. My partner asking what was I doing in the front of the boat missing all those fish. Then couple more casts later I connected at the side of the boat with a 18inch that was followed but a big walleye behind it. Even the guy in the back of the boat saw it. A little later the wind died and fishing got tougher but we managed to get 9 in the livewell before the east wind kicked up and we battled 2 to 3 footers coming in.
Overall for us no dominant bait. Leeches and crawlers on jigs, plastics, casting cranks all produced. Key was position on the reef. Some fish were dead on top in 3-4 feet, some of the break in 6-7.
Had a great time with Ed as usual on a beautiful day (until the wind hit) and way overdue.
