It was probably pushed to your computer in the background a long time ago. If none of you saw it installing, it probably was installed on a restart, especially if you get auto windows updates.

I did the windows 10 update and it erased my documents folder and a bunch of data for my thesis. Took it in to professionals and they could find no trace the files ever existed. Pretty pissed about that
..June 18, 2016 at 10:13 am #1625142You can roll your PC back to whatever you had within 30 days of the WX install. After that it is too late. Instructions should be freely available on the internet.

..I’d be beyond pretty pissed. Operating system upgrades should leave file system folders, outside the one having to do with the operating system, intact.
June 18, 2016 at 11:43 am #1625146Tried all sorts of common fixes and system rsstores… nothing worked

This is what we did and it worked.
June 19, 2016 at 5:26 pm #1625284Did you have to start the thesis from scratch then?
Not the research part…. but the data analysis yes. Probably lost 200-300 hours of work.
June 19, 2016 at 6:59 pm #1625290You might want to learn about Google drive or another cloud based storage technology where you can keep documents and other personal things stored off site. Anything that is of a personal or financial nature can be encrypted. It is also a good idea to have a backup system such as a external hard drive for backing up your system in case of a disaster.
June 19, 2016 at 7:39 pm #1625294There’s a program out there called Never10 that I used to kill the Windows Update process that tries to force install 10. No more pop ups or worries.
June 19, 2016 at 9:35 pm #1625305I guess I am the oddball here I really like Windows 10 and have had zero issues with it or using it. The only gripe I do have you cannot right click on a page and get…. where would you like to send it too…. have to do a copy paste.
June 20, 2016 at 5:21 am #1625312I’ve been running Windows 10 too since windows 8
I don’t mind it either, but the Apps part I find pretty much useless. About the only app I use is a radar app.

This is great advice! I ran into the same issue Youngfry ran into. I have since turned off auto updates and only install after I have all files backed up…I use an Apple computer, and even the guys at the Apple store years ago could not find anything…
It was my thesis debating the effectiveness of collective bargaining in regards to a states economy…I told the guy at the Apple store it was a coverup of sorts…

June 20, 2016 at 8:44 am #1625341Plus, it logs all keystrokes. In other words, Microsoft can see every email, document and password.
Most the tech sites I look at say no there is no keystroke logging. There is a feedback option for certain parts of Windows 10, but you can opt out of it.
But I know how you feel, the wife is the same way. Windows 7 to the end.
Me, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google doesn’t know what color underwear I put on every morning because I opt in to everything with them.
June 20, 2016 at 8:47 am #1625343I use Google Drive for documents and such and have many things backed up through Dropbox. The data for my thesis I am producing in ArcGIS and run everything on my computer to speed up processing speed. Obviously I should have had a stronger back up but have never had an issue getting things back in the past.
I have Windows 10 on my desktop at work… everything is fine and I haven’t had many issues with it. This happened on my work laptop.
June 20, 2016 at 9:42 am #1625360Dang, I thought Windows 10 was pretty good. Way better than Windows 8 anyways. Windows 10 for me is very similar to Windows 7 with some added perks.
June 20, 2016 at 10:18 am #1625364I have Windows 10 on the work laptop too. It’s a Lenovo touchscreen, sort of like a surface, I can use it like a tablet, however a 15″, or whatever it is, is a little impractical as a tablet.
Anyone use Windows 10 on a tablet, touchscreen or surface? The one thing that bugs me is that if I tap on a text box, the virtual keyboard doesn’t automatically come up. Am I missing a setting? I may have found the answer, I think I might have to switch to tablet mode manually, although I’d assume it would do that when I fold the screen back on top of the back of the keyboard.
I don’t know about others, but I used to avoid backing up just because it is a pain to manage. Right now I use Google photos for my pictures, because my phone automatically uploads them. But then I need to manually upload my SLR camera photos. I am running out of room, because I refuse to go the free route which compresses the photos and does not use the original.
I also back up all my photos manually to my laptop AND an external flash drive.
I don’t know why I am so anal about not going the free route with Google photos. Heck, I bet 75% of the photos I save I’ll never even look at again or do anything but browse them on my phone.
June 20, 2016 at 1:45 pm #1625416If you have Windows 8, a move to WinX is an upgrade. If Win 7 then with the things you are losing especially without a touch screen is a potentially a downgrade. Even if you have Win 7 and avoided the WinX updates you may still have some of the WinX spyware loaded on your machine, especially if you just let MS have carte blanche with your updates.
