So opener has a current wind forecast of 15-20 gusting to 25 out of the east. Thoughts on fishing in a relatively small (for ML) 16.5 deep V on the east end sand? Wanna take the kiddo he’s game and a tough (13) fishing fanatic. Safety? Thanks!

You might be ok somewhere on the east side on near-shore structure. On the other hand that east wind can make the west side really good…

I wouldn’t put too much stock in a wind forecast that is 5 days out.

If the wind is what you described you would be just fine fishing the east side in a 16.5 ft boat. I did it for years. Plus, you likely won’t need to go far from shore on opener.

They can hardly predict snowstorms 12 hours out. I wouldn’t put too much faith in any forecast 5 days out.

I agree with Tom do not put too muck stock in a forcast 5 days out, it could be worse!
Kidding aside good luck to both of you.

Have a plan of attack for areas you want to target based on predicted winds closer to the weekend.

    Wear your PFDs.

    Have fun.

Unlike winter weather forecasting, I find summer weather forecasting in Minnesota much more reliable. They are often spot on 3 days out and often correct about 80% of the time 5 days out. Often really accurate on winds. But that said, Its Minnesota. The weather for 12 Hr’s from now can be totally off.

You will be fine if you launch fro the direction of the wind. If it gets to be to much plenty of lakes around to try.

He’s 13 and likes to fish? Head to the west side, bob around in the rollers, and crush. You won’t notice the waves after the first couple passes.

    Exactly!

While I’ll be the first to get frustrated with the inaccuracies in today’s weather forecasts, I have to admit that the wind forecast is usually pretty spot on.
I always check the Wind Alert forecast on Mnlakecam.com. That is the most accurate wind forecast for mille lacs that I have found.

If the forecast is 10-20, I add them together!

Thanks folks! Totally get the unpredictability and limits of our ability to forecast.

Soooo…assuming the wind materializes as stated, do any of you more seasoned anglers than I have advice?

If the forecast is correct and you’re committed to fishing ML, I’d launch on the NE side out of Malmo or the Red Door. You will likely only be able to fish the north or northeast end, but should be able to find some fish. First break on the sand with a long lead lindy rig is an early season staple in that area. If it’s slow don’t hesitate to drag cranks real shallow.

Same general area. Other launch locations to consider.

All off highway 47 on the NE side.

    – Castaways Resort

    – Fishers Resort

    – Wilderness RV park.

You can fish all of those access within a 1/2 mile of shore.

Pack your patience. If the wind does blow as forecasted, there will be a lot of people headed to the same area!
