In a week, me and a few buddies are going to be camping on the St. Croix just north of William O’brien state park and need a boat to get to the campsites.

I was hoping someone could tell me where the best place to launch a 17ft boat that could be parked over night. Is it the landing in WO SP? or maybe the one in Osceola?

    Thanks!

Either one in my opinion would work well.

If you don’t know that stretch of the Croix I would definitely use whatever is closer to where you are camping. It is doable in a 17′ boat but there are alot of shallow stretches between the two landings.

dont use copas unless you are very good with a trailer. even then you might find getting turned around for the ramp is not doable and have to back all the way back up the hill. if you can get turned around for the ramp bring your a game. nice and steep with a sharp turn at the bottom. if you get this far next is to find some parking. unless you want to drive the truck and trailer over the boulders along side the road good chance you are heading back to the top of the hill or one of the side roads. not done yet. vehicles where getting valve steems cut there last summer.

this ramp had major improvements done to it last summer.

Camped at William OBrien this weekend and didn’t bring the boat, but the ramp was fine and plenty of parking in the lot.

Water levels where still up pretty good last weekend but are dropping. Would think you should be fine getting a 17’er around for the weekend just take it easy. Bet it will be shallow getting in and out of the state park but should be able to do it. Water temps are warm enough that getting out and pushing through spots wont be bad. 73 last weekend.

Where about you guys thinking about camping? Not sure if Ill be back over Sunday or heading to Mille Lacs.

Went up to Osceola Saturday evening, was suprised how much water dropped with level gauge numbers being relatively close to what it was on opener where it was 2′ higher.

We are staying just north of the Copas landing and south of the Swing Bridge Soo Line RR.

Lots of good spots in that area. Sheepheads where biting like crazy again last weekend. We didnt try to hard to find anything else. Pretty warm out so mostly found a spot under some shade and bottom fished. With it predicted to be in the 90s this weekend got a feeling Ill be over there doing the same again this weekend. Water temps where 73 last weekend but still plenty warm enough to cool off in.
